Soros, why I disagree...

I've heard that Intel wanted to be in this space years ago. In fact they had started doing developments in that area. I was told that MSFT told Intel to sell it off or they would turn to AMD. So Intel sold off its intial trusted computing efforts to....InterTrust.

So I think Intel has wanted to be in this area for a long time. MSFT being pinned to the mat by InterTrust opened the door and they stepped through.
