It was sarcasm. Nanoco clearly knew it was coming, as did Nanosys. Samsung gave them an investment in 2010 to start researching Cd-free (http://www.xconomy.com/san-francisco/2010/08/10/nanosys-raises-25-million-unveils-three-pronged-deal-with-samsung/#). The only company that was "surprised" by this was QMC.

It's well known that Cd performs MUCH better than Cd-free, hence the Hyperion solution. The RoHS compliant amount of Cd provides an extra performance boost I imagine (hence why it's used in the green dots). I've said it before. RoHS has always allowed <100ppm of Cd in electronics. QDs are NOT the first consumer electronics to use Cadmium....

I think the supply of QDs isn't a hold up like some people think. The main cost of the QDEF is the barrier film, not the QDs. Read a few of Nanosys/3Ms patents about QDEF. They've engineered a solution that used 1/4 of the amount of QDs, but keeps brightness and performance where it was. Drops the price a touch but not a significant amount

How many times are we going to hear "Let's wait for CES NEXT year" or "Let's wait for the NEXT 10Q" or "Let's wait for the NEXT 10K".....
