How these companies fair going forward isn't the point.

Yes, it is THE POINT. That was my original point in my original post. It doesn't matter if these companies (temporarily) eliminate the toxic debt, because they are already doomed before they sold it.

It is all about how they fare going forward. And the one example of yours that dropped from $10+ to 40 cents after they sold the toxic death spirals demonstrates what the market thinks of toxic issuers and what ultimately happens to them regardless.
