Sounds like a legitimate strategy to me, as long as the extra cache buys you extra performance, and people are willing to buy the extra cache.

Agreed. I have always questioned Jerry's motto of small die size, and I have always seen the risk (to AMD) of Intel's ability to force AMD into larger die sizes (capping output of AMD's only fab).

But Intel has not really used this weapon. Using this weapon would mean adding say 2 MB or 4 MB of cache to mainstream processors, not adding it to a boutique processor (Itanium) to cover up its shorcommings.

Tenchu, Intel most likely is preparing the cache revolution.

One year ago the cheapest P4 was around $110. Now it's $169.

So Intel successfully moved all entry-level and budget market to Celeron and prepared P4 for more expensive process. Now they can increase the P4 cost to manufacture without hurting margines too much.

The 2 Mb cache in P4 3.2/800 will completely trash the current P4 3.2.
