The CFO is often asked if funding is available or if something makes financial sense to proceed based on current financial situation of the corporation, but not responsible for the direction of the companies strategy's.
That is just generally speaking. CFO's in some companies have a stronger role in decision making as compared to some corporate CFO's that only have a number crunching role.
