I highly doubt Edwards is actually demented. Remember he has been arguing that for years, and his last evaluation in 2014 found him fit for trial. But it delayed his trial so he is faking it again to get more delays.

I don't think Edwards, even if he did plead guilty, would go free. I think the Feds want to lock him up for the rest of his life, and he knows it. They would also demand restitution, which is probably a huge reason he is willing to stay in prison without trial. He almost certainly thinks, probably correctly, his only real chance to get out and without coughing up his assets is to fake dementia.
