Comb, does the 802.11g kill the battery the same way as "b" does? I'd like to have WiFi pda next year, but the power consumption is a show stopper so far.

CombJelly,

A really likable machine except they went a little overboard on blue LEDs and I just don't like XP at all...

Well. (Picture Jack Benny.) I think we have a generational difference.

The 19-year old student really liked the LEDs, preferring it to an (internally) identical Compaq machine which was sitting next to it.

He likes the look of XP, but agrees with my recommendations to make the interface more usable. Here are some standard things I do whenever I set up a WXP machine:

1. Use 'classic' start menu - the new one eats too much space & is clunky! This can be configured from the properties screen of the task bar, Start Menu tab. Also check out the 'customize' button to choose how the start menu behaves.

2. Open up Windows Explorer. Set up your view the way you like it - I prefer the 'Detailed' view. Now go to 'Tools', 'Folder Options'. Under the 'General' tab, choose 'Use Windows Classic Folders' to get rid of those useless, space-eating context menus. Also, everyone seems to like the 'Single-click...' with 'Underline icon titles only when I point at them' options.

Then go to the 'View' tab. Click 'Apply to All Folders'. This will set the view you chose above to be your default for seeing files. Go down the list of 'Advanced settings' to choose how you like things. Keep 'Remember each folder's view settings' chosen for those few folders that you may want a different view from your default.

Apply your changes and exit. Now your system behaves much like the more classic Windows systems.
