I actually think Top Golf has very little competition with actual golf courses. The food and game play of the golf make it a completely different experience than spending 4 hours out on a golf course. On a golf course you and your buddies are stretched out across the hole, walking around, looking for balls, possibly being frustrated. In Top Golf it's just you and your friends all in close contact at all times, in a much more social atmosphere, and it can only be for an hour and cost 1/8-1/4 of what an actual golf outing would cost (depending on time/day/number of players). Modern Round, likewise, is likely a very different experience than an actual shooting range.

fish: TopGolf's clientele is mostly the non-golfer.

The majority of people that go to TopGolf are not golfers. They're not going to be there for 5 - 6 hours and they have nice comfy couches to sit on, big screen TVs to watch and some pretty good food served to them. The scoring is more like bowling and even if you stink at golf you can score some points and have fun.

TopGolf (Tampa, FL) opened 1.5 years ago near me and it is packed, wait times can go up to 5 - 6 hours for a booth when it's busy.
