If this was something related to a problem with the phase 3 trial, where the company is playing defense, it would be unusual for NWBO to use the word "major".

Huh? It's also used to outline risks. Major certainly isn't relegated to positive or negative but it does imply substantial. Being that they called it an "issue", I would lean more to the negative. They also said the halt may never be lifted....

I'm interpreting it to be something extensive and significant in favor of the company.

Of course you are! Instead of looking historically at the company and their track record of NEVER delivering anything positive for shareholders, taking a look at all of the clues that point to something negative, and the fact that the trial has been halted for 10 months..... I would say you may be a little biased.
