When you come down from the soap box consider a few points: Clinical trials are a scientific process. The placebo effect is real. Trial participants are volunteers. "Non-toxic" means no SAE's detected, not no SAE's exist. (If you don't get this last one, consider that most carcinogens took a while to be discovered.)
These are why a random placebo arm is used unless the physiological benefit is stark or the patient's death is otherwise imminent.
