I first voted then too. I don't remember for whom, since there weren't any interesting races in Pennsylvania, where I then lived. But it would have been Dems.

By then, I was 22.

The federal voting age was changed by the 26th Amendment, in March 1971:

1970 was the first year I voted as well in NY.

The primary was held in June and I had registered to vote when I was 17 since they cut off registration before I turned 18 in February.

When I went to vote in the primary they told me at the polling place I couldn't vote even though I was 18. My dad was so pissed we tracked down a judge and I got a court order allowing me to vote.

At the height of the chaotic political situation during the Vietnam War, a Republican Governor and Lieutenant Governor, a Democratic/Liberal Comptroller, a Republican/Liberal Attorney General and a Conservative U.S. Senator were elected.

The incumbents Rockefeller, Wilson, Levitt and Lefkowitz were re-elected. The incumbent Goodell was defeated.

The senator who won on a 3rd party ticket was James L Buckley; William F. Buckley, Jr. brother.

Lindsey was mayor of NY at the time who was a republican but changed parties.

They were crazy times in the City.
