In theory yes but the truth is much more complex than that. You need experience trading SPY to fully understand.

when i say they buy SPY, i mean the components of SPY.
ie: many machines buying many stocks in parallel.

but they can also just buy SPY
because buying SPY results in the ETF buying the SPY components on the open market.
