Your first assertion was correct assuming that one's underlying character remains essentially unchanged over the years.
Rob and I were very close friends in college although we are long estranged. He was soft soften and kind with a wry wit expressed through a heavy South Carolina twang.
He was dedicated to his high-school sweetheart, Lydia, whom he married after graduation and remains so.
He was, if I recall correctly, a fellow psychology major, giving him the benefit of a broad liberal arts education prior to medical school.
He had great integrity and needless to say was extremely bright.
The Rob Califf that I once knew WAS an awesome fellow. I wish him the best as FDA commish!!!
