As you've probably already read, a "rec" is a recommendation. Most of us prefer the number of recs over a "rating" because the rec total instantly tells you how many people recommend the post. A rating is a simple average, and unless the board decides to include it in the full list (which most don't) you don't know how many people are in the average, and since you can choose on a scale of 1 to 5, it's easy to skew results if there are only a few raters. A waste of time, imo.
