There was an incredible amount of volatility from October through end of year. These guys are smart enough to wait until there is more clarity. The fact that anyone bought during that time period is amazing to me. Speaks volumes. Wait until this quarter when the volatility is like it is and it appreciates over 5
Every fund has their own rules. Many buy sub $5 stocks. For example look at Baker Brothers. With over 100 stocks and say 12 under $5 and a couple under $1 the weighted average due to so many $20+ stocks is still above your $5 threshold. Yet Baker does buy under $5. There are many funds that specialize in bio stocks that have holdings and purchases under $5. Take a look at Frost Gamma or Broadstreet etc. etc. etc. Do more funds tend to buy around or above that price? Probably. A lot is due to the fact that in getting to that price vicinity there has been some derisking. It is the perceived risk factor more than price for many funds to buy IMO. A couple opinions to consider.
