Two things I think occurred with Wave:
1) The NSA did NOT want hardware-based security. So they got involved (seemingly to promote) and slow-walked it to death behind the scenes, all the while publicly promoting it.
2) WAVX was a trading vehicle for certain traders. If you read some of the day trading boards, one of the central tenets is to find a stock where you can get a "feel" for the trading and know its patterns. (And, of course, manipulate it whenever possible). This is the only reason to suppress "negative" information. It would hinder your ability to predictably trade this golden goose.
