Your right there is no salary cap. But all teams generally have a budget and when you allocate a certain amount of resources to one player it may stop you from adding another player. Sorry I'm used to the ridiculous small market ny mets payroll restrictions, where you have to be over the top of such things I mean how many years did the mets go without a starting SS for crying out loud, it was painfully obvious for years and yet they did nothing.
Heyward is a solid player, you'll like him. Thing is he fills the final whole in the lineup you needed a CF and he is the answer. I wouldn't want him. I would prefer cespedes, upton, and chris davis as I see them as the three best offensive players of FA, but that is just me in my opinion. Having said that cespedes is the only other player who could of flled your need of a CF in my opinion. So I do get heyward a lot better for the cubs.
