I think you are speaking for a certain group of optimistic investors.

The environmental discussion contrasting the free internet, sovereign control and surveillance and a trust alternative - with its impact on Wave's fortunes - reaches back at least as early as 2002. Some thought it relevant even if many disregarded it.

But I agree that the role of the US government wasn't known until Snowden revealed the extent of NSA surveillance. As soon as Snowden emerged, the implications of his revelations to TC and Wave were also discussed. And doubtless dismissed by many!

Folks choose who they listen to. It doesn't mean that things weren't said. The political context of trusted computing isn't a new discussion.
