A share buy back is where a company buys it's own shares from the marketplace. If you elect to sell your shares they are treated no different to selling your shares voluntarily. If you sell at a loss you claim back Capital Losses at end of year or you can set them against Capital gains to offset the amount of Capital gains you will pay if you have sold other Company shares at a profit.

just because a company has 1.5 billion allowable shares doesn't mean they are using all of them what we need to know is the operating share count and the float which should come out with the 2nd quarter numbers soon
