Lawyers, insurers, and yes, the FDA all have influence over doctor's practices - recall the news I posted last week about an autism doctor who was hounded (to death) by the FDA for off-label use of a variety of medications in autistic children. Yeah, he had been sued by unhappy parents before, but never had his license yanked, but the FDA could not tolerate what he was doing, too "against the grain" for them - alternative medicine docs are always on the hot seat for railing against BP, suppressed food/drug safety problems, and the FDA.
