StephanieL For the people like rooster the "confederate flag stands for hangings, beatings, separating families, no money, and even worse abuses... .." But those are in a small minority and I hate to say it at one time I too felt that way. When I was a kid I was beat up twice by a gang of blacks. I never went to school with blacks and had no blacks around us. It took a long time to get over being beat up. Took 4 years in the Air Force, and having a black NCOIC and being around other black troops that I learn to trust blacks.
For me the old thinking is just that, but as a History Major and YES I took Civil War history, I came to believe the War was not fought over slavery. It was fought over economics and yes states rights. The north bought & sold slaves just like the south. When it started to cost more to feed and keep them in cloths and house them they began to see, OK we will set you free and pay you $1.00 a day but you pay for your own food & upkeep. The south would have come around to that way of thinking, in fact a lot were already thinking that way, that's why you had men from the south that fought for the Union. You also had men from the north that fought for the south because they had paid good money for there slaves and didn't want to set them free. You see it was and is to day over "economics"
