Very stringent thoughts. Spinning it ahead, the claim Stephen made seems unlikely to be real. In case the vendor was HP a year ago, they sure would have offered a Madison replacement for free before anything else. And the customer would likely had accepted considering he is working on IA-64 software for a year already. In case Stephen is not with HP, as you said, it does not fit as well.

wbwm, wow! Nice finding. So HP is about to announce Opteron clusters? Not that this is very surprising for me, but that's a good news!

I think it is obvious that the customer was running an Itanium (Merced) cluster, not an
Itanium 2 (McKinley) cluster. One of the most common and effective FUD techniques
IPF critics (and the unwitting) employ is to confuse Itanium the processor family (IPF),
with Itanium the processor (i.e. Merced). Certain individuals have practically made an
art form out of this sly form of misrepresentation.
