re no bag
I swear, I've bought a simple tube of toothpaste and had the cashier start to reach for a plastic bag to put it in. Half the time, when I tell them "no bag, thanks" it totally throws them off their game--they get a confused look for a moment.
Although they do look at you funny when you laugh and tell them you don't need a bag for your 1-2 item purchase, I try really hard not to drive down to the store for very small purchases. I usually buy more than I can lift, or at least more items than I have fingers ... and then I have a nearly-2-yo daughter to herd while getting everything inside ....
Some stores will reward you for bringing your own bags in (US$0.05/ea), but the bags I get at the store aren't all waste: I use them to line small trash cans, for example.
I once bought a book called "50 Simple Things You Can Do To Save The Earth" (and no other item) and was asked, "Would you like that in a bag?"
Oh, well.
Take care,
