A very simple way to reduce pollution, landfill, CO2 emissions, and any number of other environmental problems:

When you go to the store and are only buying a few items, instead of choosing "paper" or "plastic" (each of which has their own share of enviromental no-no's in their production), simply say "I don't need a bag, thanks" and just grab the stuff with your bare hands.

I swear, I've bought a simple tube of toothpaste and had the cashier start to reach for a plastic bag to put it in. Half the time, when I tell them "no bag, thanks" it totally throws them off their game--they get a confused look for a moment.
