His doctor cannot control whether his insurance company will cover V w/o first trying Tricor or not, not the doc's fault. He either needs a pre-auth letter, or as some suggested, fake taking Tricor - likely has to actually get a partial fill of the scrip or the insurance company will know he actually didn't take it, against their instructions/rules, whether they make sense or not, may constitute insurance fraud - then report to his doc one of the common nasty side effects so he can get insurance approval to get V. No other way around it - the fraud issue is very real, could lead him to lose his coverage.
