If a book is ever written about Saskatchewan diamond exploration Uncle Melvie certainly deserves a chapter.

Two generally unknown facts about Saskatchewan diamond exploration are:

1) Imperial Oil drilled the first kimberlite in Saskatchewan in the 60's.

2) The recent diamond play (there have been three others) was started by rock hounds who found kimberlite in the Sturgeon Lake gravel pit. The rock was taken to a professor who identified the rock as garnetiferous ultra-mafic breccia and after the rock-hounds left there was a call placed to an associate in Toronto.
