You'll never hear me say salary escalation is somehow solely the "fault" of the Yankees.

Without question the Red Sox figure in that equation -- not just with the Schilling deal, but ... Manny Ramirez? Hello! And had MLB not nullified the deal, it was the Red Sox who wanted to the biggest contract in baseball on their team and were willing to do almost anything to get it. They couldn't wait to get the checkbook out for A-Rod's salary.

Maybe worse than both of them, though, are the L.A. Dodgers under Fred Claire. They didn't just heave around huge millions like they wanted to burn it at a bonfire -- but they chucked it around in what I regard as the most wasteful, poorest value for dollar proposition of any team in MLB.

It's one thing to pay up for the best talent in the game. It's another thing entirely to waive around enormously inflated sums to mediocre, utility caliber talent.
