It all depends

... on how you define "good return".

In my book a "good return" means the guy shows up to spring training in the best possible condition, applies himself 100% in preparation for the season, then in preparation for every game or every start, invests time in reviewing charts, tape, etc., is 100% diligent about diet, workouts, prepping for the particular ballpark and lineup (or opposing pitcher), is in the lineup every night, is 100% tenacious, focused, concentrates with 100% commitment, gives 100% effort, contributes to the team to his best as a teammate in the dugout and off the field, represents the franchise with class and dignity at all times.

That is literally all you can ask of someone. If they have done all those things, then they have done literally everything that is in their power to control. A guy who's done all that, given his very best, but is hitting .250, it's kind of silly to say, "well I'm upset he didn't hit .320, he owed us .320 considering that he's getting paid a lot of money."

"NY is a tough town ..."

All the more reason why, if you are a manager or employer of guys who play under the tough conditions, to be doing everything you can to enhance and support their ability to thrive.

I think one of the things Joe Torre doesn't get enough credit for is just that. He's a super-supportive guy who helps deflect some of the toughness, who does everything he can to enhance his players' ability to deal with it all.
