Exactly...I was an orthopedic trauma rep for a while and the relationships I had with my surgeons was tremendous. They relied on me every day to make sure the procedure went as smoothly as possible. Having that relationship with a good rep is vital, especially when it comes to new products that will advance medicine. I am clearly not a surgeon, but Im very involved with the programs that I work with. I try to be as much of a resource as possible by remaining educated. One thing to keep in mind with your good reps...we cover multiple hospitals and we see a lot of different things...especially when it comes to techniques. You may do a certain procedure a couple of times a week and we probably see 3 other guys do the same amount. With the way hospitals are castrating surgeons abilities to use product, you need your good reps around to help justify the use.

Oh and DAK, in regards to the ORTHO neediness...yes, these surgeons are mostly divas, but they do a lot of different procedures that require a lot of different tools and devices. My ex company had 49,000 different devices....Imagine having your staff try to remember this!! Its all about the staff...and somewhat about the surgeon...If I asked most surgeons to put a device together, Id 80% wouldnt know how to do it...Its the nature of the OR...put your hand out and expect the right device/tool to be in your hand. For genera surgery, the tools are limited and are generally not complex.
