"“Any time I work out the cost models, it’s not quite there,” Hamilton said. Intel is also easier to work with on some of the custom work that Amazon requires, he said. “Right now, Intel is more receptive than ARM. I’m ready to meet with them every darn day.”"

I love this quote.

Intel IS easy to work with - we had a technical problem one time which we asked them to look at related to hardware locking and they pointed out what was more or less a bug in our software with memory interlocks. The code had been written long ago and nobody had a 100% clear idea as to what it did but the Intel guy took a look and came up with the problem and fix. It might have been a "fresh eyes" thing but he knew his area.

Surely this can't be right - the nimble, not-tied-down-to-legacy-SW, IP-building-block based, innovative ARM community can't keep up with Intel?

I wouldn't have expected anything else at this point. What ARM company can talk sensibly about customization with Amazon when there isn't an established product as a baseline yet? They would be spending their efforts on a baseline or on their own solutions first. Their first hurdle with Amazon will be showing that they have a reasonable product without customization,

AWS, the cloud-computing arm of the Web retailer, remains open to working with providers of ARM-based chips and is hiring more semiconductor engineers to add to its own capabilities, Hamilton said.

Funny, the undercurrent I got from that article is that AWS is ready to switch to ARM as soon as they feel it's worth it. For now, the very first generation of ARM servers isn't quite there for AWS's tastes.

The real question is, why is it news that AWS isn't doing so yet? Who benefits from soliciting and presenting this testimonial that ARM servers aren't (yet) superior to Intel servers?

(Hint: It's called "PR")

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), which operates some of the world’s largest data centers, said makers of chips that use ARM Holdings Plc (ARM)’s technology aren’t keeping up with Intel Corp. (INTC)’s pace of innovation.

“It’s just not quite moving fast enough,” Hamilton said in an interview, referring to the pace of development of ARM-chip technology.

Some folks here....they be so sad today. Hahaha
