and IMHO there is ZERO COST BASIS , the WAMU shares were what ya had a cost basis in WAMU and when they got wiped there was your loss

In my example if the holder had sold 60 shares in July 2012, the gain/loss on the first 50 shares would be long-term, while the gain/loss on the next 10 would be short term. So with regard to the original shares of WMIH issued in March 2012, FIFO would, in fact, matter until the end of March 2013.

The real point of my post was to illustrate (1) that shares of WMIH received back in March 2012 will have varying purchase dates and bases and (2) that in March of 2012 no capital gain or loss event occurred simply by the cancellation of old Washington Mutual shares and the receipt of WMIH shares.
