What a riot! I have a similar story. My brother-in-law and I were a few minutes early for a round of golf and the starter told us if we hurried we could join a twosome who'd already teed off on the first tee. So we cut short our putting practice (big mistake!), teed off, and joined them.
The guys seemed really nice, and were only average golfers. By the fifth hole we realized something was weird--a group of kids was following our group around and growing larger every hole. It soon became pretty obvious that one of these guys was an athlete.
You've got to understand that neither me or my brother-in-law are baseball fans--in fact I renounced the sport after the strike and didn't (and still don't) follow it at all. So my brother-in-law gamely went up to the one the kids were following and asked, "So, do you play for one of the teams around here?" This was Florida, in the winter, so it was really an ignorant thing to say because there aren't exactly a lot of teams "around here". But the guy was real nice and said, sure, I play for the Yankees. Doh.
Turned out it was Derrick Jeter, the winter after his rookie year. Two months later he was on the cover of Time Magazine and even I would have been able to recognize him.
