Gary, I've read enough of your stuff to know you are fair & open minded. I'll pass along an eye opener for me that happened a week after the OKC policeman killing that I spoke of earlier.
I was driving on a long causeway across a large lake in eastern OK. Ahead I saw a well dressed couple standing beside their broken down car. I was slowing to help them, when I saw they were Black. I was still feeling some bitterness over the OKC incident, so I drove past them.
I hadn't gone 30 miles when I threw a fan belt on my car. It was almost dark and I was about 15 miles from the nearest town. A beat up old sedan stopped to help me. It was a 30ish Black couple with 4 kids jammed in the car.
The man drove me back to town where I bought a new fan belt. He drove me back to my car and helped me put on the fan belt. I gave him my most sincere thanks and offered him $10. Not a small amount in 1964. He politely declined and went on his way.
I still get guilty pangs thinking about driving past the Black couple.
