Regardless of the cause of nerve damage, re-myelination of the insulation on nerve cells is a very slow process, similar to re-innervation after being surgically cut, as when I had three surgeries to fixate my broken my ankle.

It helps to have Vitamin B-12 available during the long process of healing, but it still takes roughly two years to have fully function nerve network.

During the healing process, the nerves are extremely vulnerable to additional damage from high sugar levels in diabetes or autoimmune attack in most other cases of demyelination - so bottom line sugar control is essential, even if that requires an implanted insulin pump. Additional damage during nerve repair simply postpones the recovery that much longer - so it just can't happen. Otherwise there's just continued progression of nerve damage.
