I can buy, sell, short and buy to cover before 8am as can many people. Just depends on your brokerage firm. I have accounts at IB and Scottrade and both allow trading before 8am.

As far as I know, trading isn't allowed until 8:00 am. I bet some shorts wish otherwise right now, lol.
