#4866 RE: CombJelly #4856

Comb, we saw 12 (or was it 14?) new PNI instructions on some sort of slides. As no other announcements are coming and we have 6 months to release, I would stick with those SSE3 instructions as what it is new there.

I wonder if it is possible to make the support for 32-bit virtual address space for each process to not to share same 32-bit space without any changes in instruction set? As I recall from many years ago x86 cpu reads all memory segment information from memory as a memory translation table. It should be possible to make the superset of this table format to include 40- or 48-bit physical address space. Doesn't look like a big deal for software support. If MS already has those specs under NDA they will do it in 6 months timeframe. Linux folks will need at least 4 months to get hands on. So let wait for PNI in July.

combjelly re: But if they expect to have software support for that anytime soon, they can't keep it secret...

There is no need for any software support at all if they want to use some capabilities only for a demonstration.

As for what Hans is speculating about, I am far from a position to make any reasonable judgement.

But even without any clue about his arguments, the first question i asked myself looking at his stuff: Where is the picture of the die from his theories are based on?
