blauboad, you have a point with differences between SSE/3DNow! vs. Yamhill/AMD64. However, there are enough similarities so that history should be guidance - if Yamhill is not AMD64 (it might actually be licensed...) then expect Intel's FUD campaign to be don't invest (develope, buy) AMD64, it won't be compatible with Yamhill. They will cover the development costs for Yamhill for a few select applications and get some public statements from those companies about how "Yamhill is the future, that's why we are skipping Athlon64".
Don't know if it will work for Intel, but that is their natural strategy and it has to be taken seriously. AMD's response is to show how their x86-64 strategy is correct, and that Intel is following with their own implementation. "Why wait for Intel when you can have your database (or game) running on 64-bit right now?"
This scenerio would be quite a battle!
