Hey Lifter, control of the air is key in any form of military conflict, I really doubt if Russia wants to risk armored columns, supply channels, etc., to aerial bombardment, visa vi, Iraq, most notably Desert Storm, not to mention armed insurgents. To me it's looking like another version of the Crimea annexation, more complex and tricky this time, but it appears that Ukrainian dissidents, aka, Russian sympathizers are spreading like wildfire across eastern Ukraine. This might compel the current Ukrainian government to agree to a referendum of sorts, and then things will get interesting, especially if a vote to be annexed to Russia passes. Way too soon to guess, but Russia appears to be weaving a web that requires no military intervention, which any armed intervention, would be, in my opinion, disastrous to them (Russia). Interesting goings on for sure. :)
