Great question...I can not say for certain, but I would say most likely the benefit of any statin lies in its anti inflammatory properties. This opinion you are unlikely to find in any medical textbook. It stands to reason since the primary abnormality in atherosclerosis is elevated inflammation, that any drug which moves the needle toward diminished risk, most likely does it by lowering inflammation.

To find the extent that Zocor and Lipitor lower inflammation, you would have to run a JUPITER like trial on these statins.
