...a monopoly product that AAPL refuses to license to anyone else.

Which is good - it lets Apple wave the same heavy "we've got you locked-in" hammer Microsoft has been waving with Office file formats - and this is exactly where oversized profits come from. In terms of consumer choice it sucks, but hey, as shareholders our obligation is to take care of profits first!
