Nortel to demonstrate new mobile TV solutions
Feb 14, 2006 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- A series of new mobile television solutions for mobile operators is being demonstrated by communications company Nortel (NYSE:NT) at Barcelona's 3GSM World Congress 2006 in Spain.
Nortel said its 3G-enabled Digital Mobile TV and Digital Broadcast solutions help 3G operators to provide services that are high quality and more cost-efficient. It claimed the solutions allow operators to take advantage of increasing demand for video services, enabling them to provide TV content through existing cellular networks.
Nortel said it will use its live HSDPA network to demonstrate the improved image quality of 'on the go' video content. It will use Category 6 HSDPA terminals, receiving information at 3.6Mb/s, to show how video service can be added by operators at a lower cost per bit, without the need for extra spectrum.
In addition Nortel will show how 3G Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS), a 3GPP industry standard, can be integrated by 3G operators into their 3G access portfolio. MBMS will at first offer the chance for simultaneous broadcast, or multicast, to a limited number of TV channels, with a later move to next-generation access technology such as Nortel's HSOPA solution MIMO-OFDM planned, to enable broader multicasting.
Nortel also intends to show mobile operators how they can integrate its DVB-H solution into their existing mobile infrastructure, helping to improve consumer experience and provide a common billing and network management solution.
