Equine Cell Therapy

“Calder Sensation” 6 yo Standardbred wins again after being written off!!

Innovative new therapy means bowed tendons are no longer a career ending injury.

Calder Sensation showed promise after coming 4th in the Inter Dominion Trotters’ Championships as a 4yo. After injuring his suspensory ligament 12 months earlier, the horse was given very little chance of recovery and no chance of ever racing again. Despite being rested for 3 months the horse pulled up lame again after returning to work.

Calder Sensation underwent the revolutionary Cell Therapy treatment which has been developed by Drs. Patrick Casey and Richard Fry.

Equine Cell Therapy Pty Ltd can now offer this landmark technology which has passed the trial phase. This is a new safe non-invasive procedure that speeds recovery and improves healing.

Tendon Injury

Tendon injuries are one of the largest causes of wastage of performance horses. A tendon sprain or bowed tendon involves the breakdown of elastic tendon fibres which under the normal healing process are replaced by inelastic fibrous scar tissue which when put under the stress of exercise is prone to breakdown again – a career ending injury.

What does Equine Therapy Cells Ltd do?

Equine Cell Therapy Pty Ltd has developed a unique method of tissue transplantation to aid in the repair and regeneration of damaged, diseased, torn or ruptured musculoskeletal cells and tissue. It is an original and highly efficient method for growing tendon and articular cartilage for auto transplantation into individual, affected areas. Equine Cell Therapy Pty Ltd research indicates that adult cells can divide and be grown in the laboratory, contrary to popular scientific theory. Given the right culture conditions, Equine therapy Cells Ltd grows cells in the millions and then successfully transplants them back into the injured tissue, leading to tissue repair.

Can a bowed tendon be treated?

Yes. This cellular treatment is ideal for a horse diagnosed with a bowed tendon. Most specifically where the tendon has a discreet core lesion.

How does it work?

Tendon cells are taken non traumatically from the injured horses neck ligament. Over the next 10 days these cells are treated in the laboratory to revert back to an embryonic stage of development. They are then transplanted back into the injured tendon site.

Does the therapy use complicated surgery?

No. All procedures are performed under sedation and local anaesthesia with the horse standing. The horse doesn’t even stay in hospital.

What does this mean for you?

Injuries to a horse’s tendon can severely limit its performance, often ending careers and in some cases, the horse’s life. Equine Cell Therapy Pty Ltd offers an alternative, which has been successfully achieved in 14 cases of discreet core tendon lesions in horses in Australia.

Initial results have been very encouraging. If you would like further information on this technology, or arrange for the assessment of your horse for suitability for this treatment, please contact Dr. James Vanner at Geelong Vet Hospital
