Optically levitating, glowing, nanoscale diamonds: this lab-demonstrated phenomenon looks promising for volumetric 3D, in my opinion. The article only mentions its applicability to quantum information systems, but a quantum computer to facilitate the huge amounts of data required for volumetric visualization, coupled to a holographic display, both running on the same technology of levitating diamonds...that would be cool. The key to a 'freespace' display, perhaps... Maybe I'm way off. Very likely as this stuff is way over my head. Check out the video.
