When you zoom in on the pic of the device it looks like a test coupon with many structures that may not even be waveguides.

BSmith the header at top of that slide on p18 clearly states:

Also the picture on the right of that slide is clearly of an existing (set of) device(s)

SO

what would the logic be to compare to a test coupon picture on the left as you are suggesting, to an existing device on the right?
