Bulgarian Awards
The first annual awards ceremony for Bulgarian filmmakers was held on January 13 in Sofia’s Army Theatre.
Georgi Dulgerov’s Lady Z, which has already received international acclaim, received the award for best film.
Best documentary went to Georgi and the Butterflies (www.georgiandthebutterflies.com), produced by Andrey Paunov.
Boris Despodov’s Tick-Tack received the award for best animated picture.
Culture Minister Stefan Danailov presented an award for overall contribution to Bulgarian cinema to Prof. Hristo Hristov.
The ceremony was held on January 13 to mark the date of the premier of the first Bulgarian film, Bulgaran e Galant by Vassil Gendov in 1915.
Last year, the government proclaimed January 13 a professional holiday for all workers in the filmmaking industry.

Pacino to film in Bulgaria
Nu Image Studios, the owners of the newly privatised Bulgarian Boyana film studio, announced that they would be filming a romantic drama starring Al Pacino and Scarlett Johansson in Bulgaria later this year. Napoleon and Betsy is one of five films the company plans to make in Bulgaria in 2006. Other projects include Rin Tin Tin, the Day of the Dead, and The Code, starring Morgan Freeman.
