It's a legitimate distinction. Just ask Antonio Villarigosa, a JD who failed the bar four times, and thus, is not a lawyer.

Let's cut Vinny some slack here. Putting J.D. behind your name DOES NOT equate to claiming to be a lawyer. It equates to claiming to having a degree in law. To be a lawyer, you need to be called to the bar and licensed to practice in your jurisdiction.
