carrier injection/depletion modulators are used by a lot of silicon photonics companies. intel has issued numerous papers on that method as well as soh modulators.

leonberger said in his presentation that it has issues at higher bandwidths. it also has issues with certain advanced modulation formats and very low operating voltages.

i don't think its truly a case of if one is better than the other as both seem to have there place for different types of applications.
