IPWireless Unveils Mobile Broadband Solution For Operators with Paired
Spectrum Successful Handoff Between Sectors at 120 Kilometers Per Hour Validates
the Real-World Performance of IPWireless Mobile Broadband
SAN BRUNO, Calif., Apr 15, 2003 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- IPWireless, Inc., the world leader in commercial mobile broadband deployments, today announced a new network option for operators, adding to its industry-leading TD-CDMA mobile broadband network solution that has been deployed globally for more than 12 months. Based on significant demand from operators with access to non-contiguous channels including the IMT2000 and PCS paired spectrum channels, the new IPWireless(TM) network solution gives these operators the highest capacity mobile network option available -- delivering up to 25 Mbps of bandwidth for a typical cell site today. The high capacity, full mobility, and low cost of the solution allows these operators to profitably offer a variety of wireless services at far lower cost than traditional solutions. Providing further testimony to the complete mobility of its technology, IPWireless also announced today the successful handoff of a user session traveling at 120 kilometers per hour, consistent with the specification of the UMTS standard.
"Recently, we have received tremendous interest for our solution from operators around the world with existing paired spectrum channels," said William Jones, executive vice president of technology, IPWireless. "With numerous commercial deployments launched over the course of the last year, our current solution has proven itself as the leader in the market. Our new solution will allow these operators to derive the most value from their spectrum assets, offer a whole range of new services, and generate additional revenue streams."
IPWireless Network Now Available to More Operators
The IPWireless non-contiguous spectrum solution allows operators with paired frequency channels to provide the maximum bandwidth possible today in those channels and to deliver a variety of new services. The new IPWireless solution is available to operators with paired channels in the MMDS, PCS, or IMT2000 frequencies. An additional benefit to the IPWireless solution is that unlike traditional FDD solutions, there is no specific spacing requirement for the pair of channels. With a typical three-sector cell site using a pair of channels, operators will be able to accommodate more than 2,000 broadband users, more than three times the number of other solutions. By mid 2004, operators will get up to 100 Mbps of capacity per cell site, all for less than a quarter of the cost to deploy traditional 3G networks.
The new network solution will support the same commercially available devices as the current IPWireless network, allowing subscribers low latency access using SIM-enabled PCMCIA cards with their laptops, PDAs, and tablet PCs; subscribers may also use the IPWireless desktop modem to power a PC or a local area network (LAN). The high capacity, low latency, full mobility, and low cost of the solution allows these operators to profitably offer traditional wireless services such as voice and text messaging at far lower cost. In addition, operators can provide very high-speed mobile network services for laptop and PDA users, and offer broadband services to compete with DSL and cable.
Next-Generation Wireless Network Enables Mobile Computing Everywhere
The IPWireless end-to-end network solution is the first on the market that complies with the internationally recognized UMTS TD-CDMA (TDD) standard. With a number of leading 3G Project Partnership (3GPP) global vendors having already announced plans for products based on the TDD standard, operators can more quickly benefit from the economies of scale and multi-vendor innovation that comes with an established standard. Available today for operation in several licensed bands, the IPWireless product line includes a complete network infrastructure solution, pocket-sized wireless desktop modems, and PC cards (PCMCIA) for laptops and PDAs. The low-cost IPWireless broadband modem and card provide residential and business customers with instantaneous, "plug-and-play" Internet access. Additionally, the IPWireless network solution gives users the complete portability, mobility and freedom of a wireless Internet connection at higher speeds than alternative broadband offerings.
