I didn't really want to get into this completely off topic subject, but here I go.

Most of these abbreviation came about because when texting first came to be phones didn't have full keyboards, and it was a pain in the arse to text whole words.

The next hurtle was interpreting the meaning with out hearing someone say something with a sarcastic tone. It's hard to express emotion in a short blurb of text. Lol and jk, among others, was a way to tell the other person your making a joke. I don't remember learning how to write sarcasm in english class. But I wasn't great at English. Maybe I missed something.

Anyone ever try to make a derogatory statement with out implying you are joking. I have people take it personally. They take it the wrong way every time because they expect the lol to tell them you are joking. Unless they truly know your personality.

I do agree however that it is a very lazy and entitled generation. But just like computers and technology it is most likely here to stay.
