Excellent question there weaklegs, short story long, back in the day Fred Jr. used to say that they should be able make a modulator for $400 bucks and sell it $800 when they were selling for about $4,000 on the street, so I’d say the material is dirt cheap to make. Perhaps putting it through the extra steps to sterilize it might make it a bit more expensive but Zelibor made the comment one time that the most expensive part of a modulators would be the packaging and I don’t think that it will require anything except for lining up the light/fiber/wave guide or whatever, not so much for protection (Like Gig has) plus it does not require a clean room (just an inert environment when they are poling it) so I’d say that it is VERY cheap. Everyone from Zelibor, to Joe Miller to Leonberger has said that it is cheap to make and that is one of the advantages. If you listen to the Long haul providers like Verizon they are as concerned about the drive voltage as they are about the cost of the device, also factor in the cooling that is required today that won’t be required tomorrow we’ve got a homerun for the Green crowd/play as well. I think on the market today the Mods require like 4V for 10 or even 40 Gig and one of these LWLG guys said that Lightwave is shooting for 1 volt for 100 Gig. Someone can check that it may have been ½ volt. I put the numbers down from memory so I could be wrong. (Not sure how many watts/amps etc.)

I’m Long, only home for minute I Hope that helps.
Good Luck
